📜 A Short History of the Calculator

Long before phones and laptops, people were already building tools to make numbers easier to handle. The story of the calculator stretches from wooden beads all the way to sites like Calcuron.

  • Ancient beginnings – Devices like the abacus were used as far back as ~2000 BCE to help merchants and officials add, subtract, and keep track of trade.
  • Mechanical age – In 1642, Blaise Pascal built the Pascaline, a geared machine that could add and subtract. Two centuries later, Thomas de Colmar’s arithmometer became the first commercially successful office calculator.
  • Electronics & pocket calculators – In the 1960s and 1970s, electronic calculators shrank from desk-sized machines to pocket-sized devices, thanks to integrated circuits and early microprocessors. By the late 1970s, simple pocket calculators were cheap enough for schools and everyday use.
  • From hardware to the browser – Today, modern calculators live in phones, operating systems, and the web. Calcuron continues that evolution with focused, browser-based tools that stay on your device while doing the same core job: turning real-world questions into clear, reliable numbers.
